Toy Wizards would like to thank Big Potato Games for providing a sample of the MTV Throwback Music Party Quiz Board Game for us to review. You can get your own for $19.99 at Amazon or wherever your favorite games are sold.
You know, I’ve got to say– there just has to be someone over at Big Potato Games (aka Spin Master) who looks at old, nostalgic franchises and says “You know what these old people want to see in games? Trivia and charades!” and with that, the gimmick seems to be ongoing amongst their games. And by that, I basically mean this game is exactly the same as the Blockbuster Party Game with a different Winamp Skin on.
See what I did there? Nostalgia Blast!
Speaking of Winamp Skin, there’s a valid point to that statement– much of the vanity (in both the MTV and Blockbuster game) are in the presentation of “Hey, remember that?” Since Blockbuster is gone and MTV doesn’t play music videos anymore, the glory days of those nostalgia fueled memories are gone. The difference is that MTV was a television channel and Blockbuster was a store and crypt keeper of dead media.
So, we have music categories. We have a buzzer. We have trivia. We have charades. With the Blockbuster game, the charades gimmick made a little bit more sense to me (since it was movies we were acting out) but in the MTV game, I’m not quite sure that it needs to be forced upon genres of music. Teams speak lines of songs and act them out. I think it’s fun that one of methods of game play is called Total Request Live. Just this morning while I was making my coffee, I thought about Eminem going onto TRL, look how many hugs he gets.
The strongest point of this game, for someone like me, is the quick and high energy game play. I will repeat what I said about the Blockbuster game– if a game takes 10 minutes for me to learn the rules and 30 minutes or less for me to play, I am a fan. This is definitely a fun one to add to your game closet.
I give the MTV Party Game by Big Potato Games 4/5 Wizard Requests.
