Among all of the goodies and exclusive items at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, one of the most exciting items (for me) was the die-cast Macross/Robotech VF-1S made by Calibre Wings. It was the ‘Farewell Big Brother’ edition with battle damage and a bloodied pilot seat, and retailed for somewhere in the $130-$140 range and was sold exclusively at the Toynami booth during the show.
While the wonderful people had sent us an early review copy, for which we created a Spontaneous Toy Review video, we wanted to give this lovely item a second pass now that SDCC is officially over.
We were told that a non-convention version is on its way for those who could not make the show, and will update Toy Wizards readers with that information once we have it.
This aircraft, is again, made of die-cast metal and the details and paint on it are absolutely beautiful. The piece is 1:72 scale, so probably 7-8 inches long and it really looks just as beautiful in person as it does in all of the promotional images.
The biggest question from many fans is ‘Does it transform?’ and the answer to that is no– this a model of the plane, the fighter craft. However, it does look like it wants to transform. And while you know that I of all people love my robots and think the Valkyrie VF-1S Batroid is one of the coolest looking mecha out there, I’m very much okay with how classy looking this piece is.
So, what does it come with?
Inside the box, which is perfectly packed to protect this gorgeous piece, we have two little (itsy bitsy) pilots (no, they don’t articulate) a missile, and some extra aircraft pieces and accessories. All and all, it is pretty straight forward.
I’d seen some people in various toy groups online negatively discussing the physical quality of Calibre Wings’ models. I personally don’t think the build is cheap or fragile at all. I think it’s really fine quality, perfectly painted, and you’re definitely getting your money’s worth. The ‘Farewell Big Brother’ Calibre Wings Macross/Robotech VF-1S Fighter is something you can proudly display anywhere and as I’d mentioned before, it looks classy. This is a grownup collectible.
Last but not least, let’s discuss the packaging. The graphic design on this piece is so thoughtful. It’s clear that Calibre Wings are fans of the work they’re producing and not just “trying to get in on this”. There so many little nods to Robotech in the packaging. Everything from the sticker seal on top, to ‘Remove Before Flight” on the instructions booklet package, everything is calculated, considered, and handled with love and respect.
I give the ‘Farewell Big Brother’ VF-1S Fighter die-cast model SDCC Exclusive 5/5 Wizard Stars. This piece is amazing and everyone who like models, die-cast pieces, and classic anime will be proud to have this Fighter on display.
