You can make a million versions of the X-Wing and sell them all. You can make thousands of Batmen and someone will buy them. So, it seems, is true for the Megazord.
When Playmates took over Power Rangers production, I wondered if there was anything that could keep these toys fresh. Indeed, the “auto-morphin” gimmick felt a little overdone at this point, but Playmates refutes that. A rep told me that those figures, in particular, had been selling quite well. Such is the joy of Toy Fair: separating personal opinion from sales facts.

I had nothing but glowing things to say, however, about their Dino Megazord, and was excited to see the Thunders, coming soon.

At the Playmates booth, I received confirmation that the White Ranger and the Tigerzord are coming “vaguely around July.” There are also prototypes of role play-size that exist, but it’s anyone’s guess as to when or if they’ll emerge from behind office walls. In the mean time, here’s some more Power Rangers goodness.

I asked if they had any way of knowing this was pulling kids into the franchise, and Playmates said something interesting: sales of the masks, which are generally not items adult collectors go for, might be a good metric for that. It seems, because those items do sell (and more are planned), that new, young audiences are getting into this show, which, for an early ’90s sensation, ain’t bad!
