The moment Game of Thrones ended after Season 8, the literal first thought I had was “Ha ha to all of you out there who named your daughters Kaleesi or Daenerys.” My second thought was “There will literally never be another toy from this series sold ever again.”
While there are always exceptions to the rules and contrarians who get off by disagreeing with the majority of fans of a thing, I think many of us can agree that Game of Thrones was one of the worst-ended television shows many of us had ever seen. To go from a high stakes show where no one and nothing was safe from betrayal and then dooms of fate to a boring phoned in color by numbers wreck where none of the mysteries were speculated mattered or came to fruition, Game of Thrones left many viewers racking their brains with a final The HELL did I just watch?”
Look– it’s not like a show has to adhere to fan theories and speculation for its ultimate payoff, but when every single magical mysterious puzzle was deconstructed, there was no magic, Bran was the chosen one, and Then Faceless arc was…that. Yeah– no thank you. What I miss most about Game of Thrones was drinking with friends talking about we thought it was going to go versus what actually happened.
That all said, it has now been ten years since the series premiered and as a show that mattered in the world of pop culture, the anniversary needs to be acknowledged. And really, seeing these early renditions of the first season characters, it does in fact bring back some warm and fuzzies to an extent. It makes me go “Aww, remember when Robb Stark mattered? Remember when Tyrion drank and knew things? Remember when Arya’s journey was harrowing versus smug with instant non-earned payoffs?”
