Trick or Treat Studios Reveals Three Terrifying ‘Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark’ Masks

It may only be March, but it’s never too early to plan for Halloween. And few things are scarier than the classic horror anthologies Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by folklorist Alvin Schwartz. As if these stories in and of themselves weren’t terrifying enough, most (if not all) fans of these incredible books remember the nightmarish illustrations by Stephen Gammell. Ugh, they were so delightfully gross. Just stringy, vein filled splatters and grotesque faces and sunken in eyes and gruesome screaming faces.

Not to make this a history lesson (because we’re talking haunted masks today…see what I did there?) but if you recall, the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books were re-published in 2011 with all new artwork by Brett Helquist who my guess is now the most hated illustrator in the history of nostalgia. Sorry Brett– nothing personal, but you never stood a chance.

Alas, someone at the printing press got some sense bashed into them, because the books with their original scarifying artwork in all its hallowed reverenced glory are available once again. A movie was released last year (forgettable in my eyes, I didn’t see it, did you?) but the design aesthetic favored Gammel’s art.

Which leads us to these horrifying masks of terror. Each one is available for $59.99 and you can preorder them from Nightmare Toyswhich is a really cool store specializing in horror toys and memorabilia. I think one of these might be an incorrect description – it looks to me like the “Big Toe” mask is of the woman from “The Haunted House”, but I didn’t see the movie, so they may have repurposed the character design. The Pale Lady is from the story “The Dream” and Harold is…well…you remember that bloody skin.

You remember.
