Hasbro’s Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers Retro Flip-Head Toys Prove That Some Relationships Should Not Be Rekindled

Of all the classic Power Rangers toys to be remade, this one in my opinion, is not the one to bring back.

But hey, it’s not like we’re waiting for Hasbro to bring us some reasonable Megazords or anything.

During Hasbro’s PulseCon last weekend, fans were treated to many Power Rangers reveals. We had Lightning Collection Wave 7, a special convention exclusive metallic/glitter MMPR Pink Ranger Kat, confirmation that the “nicer than kids toys but not as nice as MP Transformers” Zeo Megazord was available, and then…these. The Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers Retro Flip Head toys.

Jason, you look how I feel upon seeing these toys.

Even before Hasbro acquired Power Rangers, they were big fans of making flip head toys. My daughter has the Beast from Beauty and the Beast in his flip head Prince to Beast glory. Thus, it is advantageous that similar flip head Power Rangers toys existed in the 90s. These are not new, though I’m sure that the feel will be uniquely Hasbro. (Plastics, materials, articulation, etc.)

While there are always Power Rangers fans that eat up every PR toy on the market, I think these are just awful looking. The wave comes with Jason, Zack, Billy, and Kimberly, each one’s chunky body, wide shoulders, cheaply popped in arms, and smashed faces more upsetting than the next. I can speak for myself, but also some of the Power Rangers fans that sent me these items followed by the green nauseous face emoji that many of us just don’t want these.

So, this is usually the part of the story where fans who hate my opinions start sounding off that these are kids toys. They’re not for me. They’re supposed to look like dreck. They’re budget line. And so on. I know the lyrics to this song at this point, guys, it’s all good. I’ll just refer you back to my review of the Hasbro Lightning Collection Dragon Dagger that had that 18+ age suggestion on it in spite of the fact that it’s clearly a baby toy. It makes me wonder if Hasbro is trying to pull the Mattel card ala He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Origin line. Such as, if we give the oldies their childhood toys, they will look upon us with reverence as though we were gods. Well too bad, Columbus– I see right through you.

I can’t help but wonder when the final nail in the nostalgia coffin will be struck. It makes me think of friends of mine who reach out to people they dated as teenagers. They remember that shallow, garbage heap relationship through the lenses of their own youth. Like the relationship sucked, that person was annoying, but you were young and therefore everything was bright and sunny and amazing. Alas, out of nowhere, said person that you swear you weren’t totally stalking on social media once a year for the last 20 years appears as a suggested friend. You friend them. They look like how you remembered, for better or worse. You decide to have dinner– and bam. They’re the worst. They talk too much, complain, everything is a problem, they’re bad in bed, but hey— your childhood, right?

Forgive the seemingly irrelevant tangent, but there is truth within the snark. Perhaps there are Power Rangers collectors who just for fun want to compare these new toys to the old Bandai ones they have in their toy bins. But otherwise…why?
