Mercari To Add Even More Fees To An App With No Customer Support

Pay attention toy sellers: Announced for changes to the service October 1st Mercari will add 2.9% + $0.30 on top of their already 10% flat fee. Math for you means any time an item sells that is 12.9% +$0.30 for every sale. This service has been a new eBay for a lot of sellers and buyers as eBay has done away with PayPal and all transactions have to go through more waiting times as eBay holds your funds.

Mercari also holds your funds in upwards of 10 days past the deliver date already. The big difference is customer support. eBay has lots of customer and seller support– Mercari has nothing. They are completely bare bones service to take that big of a chunk out of each sale. More and more sellers and buyers are looking for anything other than eBay however Mercari is quickly becoming the same cost wise with less protection.

What are other options to buy and sell? Facebook groups are still highly regarded sales spots but beware of those friends and family payments. These scams take buyers for the money on a daily basis. Rule of thumb don’t pay for anything without using goods and services through PayPal directly if your are on Facebook. The app might ask you to pay through Facebook or Messenger link don’t do it. There is no buyer or seller protection that way. Ask the seller to send you a invoice or his/her email for a direct payment from your PayPal account.

Mercari Statement

Payment Processing Fee

Beginning October 1, 2020, Mercari will implement a 2.9% + $0.30 payment processing fee for sellers on all completed transactions, based on the sold price.

What’s a payment processing fee?

Processing fees are charged by payment service providers to securely process and complete financial transactions. These fees can range depending on the type of: (1) transaction and (2) payment method used.

Payment processing is usually arranged and contracted between a seller and the service provider directly. Mercari handles the processing and collects a consistent fee once each transaction is completed.

It is important to us that our sellers have competitive and transparent pricing so all users know exactly what fees are being applied.

As always, there will be no listing, monthly, or hidden fees. All cards and payment methods will be charged the same payment processing fee, including American Express, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Apple Pay, and PayPal. The processing fee is also applied when the buyer uses Mercari credit or their balance.

Why is Mercari charging a payment processing fee?

We’re working hard to give you the best Mercari experience. Over the past year, we’ve added digital authentication, competitive shipping fees, and more ways to sell and ship from home. We’ve added a new processing fee so we can keep supporting our users with improved selling and shopping experiences.

When does a seller pay the fee?

The seller will pay a processing fee once the transaction is complete. It will be deducted from the seller’s earnings as the “processing fee” along with the 10% selling fee.

How are payment processing fees applied?

A processing fee is applied based on the item’s sold price. The processing fee doesn’t apply to separately stated taxes or shipping charges. If a seller creates a listing with multiple items, the payment processing fee is applied to the total amount of all the items sold.

The buyer isn’t impacted by the payment processing fee.

The payment processing fee is only required on completed transactions. It doesn’t apply to cancelled orders or listing an item.

We’ll charge a payment processing fee for all sold items listed on or after October 1, 2020. The processing fee will only be charged once the transaction for each new listing is complete.

What happens to my old listings created before October 1, 2020?

The processing fee won’t apply to listings created before October 1 until November 1, 2020. Any item that is sold on or after November 1, 2020 will have a payment processing fee.

Will I be charged other fees?

Mercari charges fees for other services we provide. To review other fees please check out our Fees on Mercari.

  1. They are cheapskates for this retro crap. I spent A LOT of time posting ads making my prices reflect profit for it to be taken by a few if I don’t up my price and now I don’t sell anyyanymore either. How do you post something ON A CONTRACT and they can add fees later??!??! F that! for them to change the fee after is unethical and illegal and I hope everyone leaves them for ebay! Also so eBay keeps their free posting incentive !

  2. Leave Mercari before it’s too late. I believe they are using this pandemic to squeeze the sellers who just trying to make a few bucks to survive this pandemic. ALL sellers should move to eBay which have a bigger customer base and it’s the same fee you have to pay.
