Disclaimer: This is a Toy Wizards Snarkticle ™ based on conjecture, assumptions, and observations that we think are funny. This piece is to point out the sequence of events that appear to have happened. It is by no means an end all (dare we call it an opinion?) and is not meant as libel or defamation against Hasbro Pulse and its subsidiaries. In other words: Just chill out.
Call it a misunderstanding. Call it…seller’s remorse? But either way, a grave miscommunication between the seller and customer has taken place.
On Friday July 10th 2020 during one of Hasbro Pulse’s weekly live streams, they announced their first HasLab project since last year’s Transformers Unicron project— a gigantic Marvel Legends Sentinel would be the next on the list for the crowdfunding treatment. Fans were excited. Really, really excited. This crowdfunding effort, while expensive at $350 is much more attainable than the enormous and expensive Jabba’s Sail Barge (which was successfully funded). Or the monstrous behemoth that was the $600 Unicron with its $200 shipping. And at the target goal of 6,000 backers, it looked like Sentinel would be a much easier end goal to hit (it was) with more people wanting to back it immediately than the slow crawl that was the Unicron (they did).
Here is where things got a little messy.
Somewhere along the lines, fans were under the assumption that for every 1,000 backers after the initial goal of 6,000, a new reward tier would be unlocked.
- Tier 1 UNLOCK: Marvel Legends Master Mold alternate head accessory
- Tier 2 UNLOCK: Battle Damaged Head & Hand accessory
- Tier 3 UNLOCK: Marvel Legends 6-inch Female Prime Sentinel Figure
However, once backers 7,000 – 9,000 came in a hurry (like nearly overnight) and just kept climbing, Hasbro knew that if they weren’t careful, there would be no end to the extra goodies fans were hoping to get. As of this writing, the project is at nearly 12,000 backers after only a week. This must have surpassed Hasbro’s expectations, because now, the reward tiers are capped to three which have all been unlocked.
Hasbro, to their credit, realized the discrepancy and admitted that the information on the official Sentinel HasLab page had some verbiage that was unclear. Per Hasbro (using very strong language that seems to come directly from Human Resources), “There were a total of 3 planned tiers at 7,000, 8,000 and 9,000 backers. We outlined this during the July 10th reveal and livestream.”
Ouch, way to make me feel like a dope that can’t listen to outlines on livestreams. Somehow, I can’t help but think these capped tiers are conveniently coming out of left field. But because “fans come first” (and seriously, if I were a Hasbro executive I’d be so stressed that I don’t know if I could come at all), HasLab is kicking down all backers with a second tentacle. That’ll satiate ya.
The only way Hasbro could make this even better is by announcing that extra stock will be sold exclusively at Walmart.
To all the amazing Marvel Legends fans – THANK YOU for the most uncanny launch week in HasLab history! We were blown away by all the support and did not anticipate the project to be where it stands now after only one week – 100% funded with all 3 tiers unlocked and over 11,000 total backers.
We want to apologize for any confusion around the communication of the tier unlocks. There were a total of 3 planned tiers at 7,000, 8,000 and 9,000 backers. We outlined this during the July 10th reveal and livestream. However, we recognize that the online product page copy was phrased less clearly. At Hasbro Pulse, fans come first. We certainly hope that all Sentinel backers are still as excited as we are, but if any backers are having second thoughts, please refer to the crowdfund cancellation & refund policy. Payments have not yet been processed.
Late last week, the Sentinel crowdfund launched in Europe through Zavvi.com and we are working to finalize plans for additional countries. As a thank you to all the passionate Marvel Legends fans around the world, we are adding a SECOND tentacle accessory to the package. Now each backer of the 26.3-inch tall Sentinel will receive two 18-inch bendy wire tentacle accessories perfect for play or display.
So, what’s next for the next 35 days? We’ll be bringing you behind the scenes content and other development updates to take you on the journey of bringing this mutant-hunting monstrosity to life. Stay tuned!
