A few months back at GameStop, a product appeared from the depths of nowhere. It was a Power Rangers Megazord letter opener statue, likely a Think Geek product, and it retailed for $39.99. It’s currently unavailable online, but you can still find it in select GameStop stores ranging in price from $20-$40.
So, for those of you who would rather read a toy review than watch a video, let’s bring up some talking points here. Because this product was completely not-advertised, I wasn’t even sure if was a Hasbro product or a carryover from the Saban/Bandai era. It is in fact a Hasbro product.
With this, it;s a very important product to discuss. Not only is this 6-7 inch Mighty Morphin’ Megazord completely niche because of the whole statue/letter opener angle, but it’s one of the few (if not the only) classic Megazord items released by Hasbro. With all due respect to the toy giant, it’s beginning to feel like there is some sort of vendetta over there in the toy design office. We are currently lead to believe that there are no plans for Megazords in the pipeline and the new Ultra Megazord for the current season of Power Rangers on television, Beast Morphers is well…let’s just say that it’s not up to Transformers quality. Which is really a shame for a toy company that has been making transformable robots for decades.
Onto this letter opener– it is a ceramic piece that wields a metal sword. It looks fantastic. The 2 inch or so base has the 90s MMPR logo on it, and the Megazord is in a sort of take-charge pose, ready for battle. I actually use this letter opener all the time and keep it on my desk like the classy adult I am.
The good: This piece is such a fun and cool idea. We are under represented for Megazords by Hasbro and this letter opener is a great idea. I loved the packaging and it was really exciting knowing that I had to hunt this little number down in the shop where my local GameStop was getting only one.
The less good: $40 is asking a lot of a ceramic statue with a bad paint job. Seriously, it’s dripping and sloppy in some spots. I would love to see a full line of Megazord office supplies from Hasbro and GameStop. Like not just MMPR, but Lost Galaxy, Dragonzord, Astro Megazord, Wildforce Megazord, Samurai Megazord, Zeo Megazord, Mystic Force Megazord…
But I mean…it doesn’t have to be just my favorites. But it can if it wants to be.
I give the MMPR Megazord Letter opener 3 out of 5 stars. Maybe 3.5 because at least Megazord sequence has been initiated.
