Japanese Artist Toku Inoue Creates ‘The Mishaps of Tom’ Toy Collection

These are some of the most amazing toys I’ve ever seen, both in premise and execution.

Trickled onto Twitter between October 2018 and June 2019, Japanese artist Toku Inoue freakin’ killed it with the toy premise. He took the ‘mishaps of Tom’ from Tom and Jerry and turned a bunch of physical gags into toys.

Physical comedy like this was a staple in the Golden Age of cartoons, but sometimes the moments happened so quickly that we, the audience, laughs, and then the spastic narrative moves on. But Inoue brilliantly zeroed in and immortalized these gags as toys. And seriously, not just toys, but perfectly sculpted toys.

Tom and Jerry were kings in the ‘chase’ genre of cartoon, literally turning a game of cat and mouse into a game of cat and mouse. Alongside Wiley Coyote and Road Runner, Tweety Bird and Sylvester, Bugs Bunny v Everyone, and so on, Tom and Jerry were filled with unforgettable comedy, violence, and clever antics.

So, where can you get these amazing toys? Well, from what we can see, they are original pieces and not for sale. But who comes to the rescue in cases like these? That’s right– China, with bootlegs ready and rearing to go.

A full set of these is running $60-$75 on eBay right now, and like I always say when buying toys from China, buyer beware. You honestly never know what you’re going to get, you don’t know what your money is going toward, and you sometimes don’t even know if these toys are going to show up. For a price point that high, I personally wouldn’t buy Chinese bootlegs. I’d spend the extra $30-$40 and support the artist if that option was possible. Ultimately, these aren’t officially licensed products, and I personally (at the risk of sounding like a Mary Sue) really believe in supporting IP and artists when applicable.

There is a place for fan art, reimaginings, and artistic liberties.
