Optimus Prime– two words from the 80s that sound amazing together and no one even questions what they mean. Add Peter Cullen’s voice acting into the mix, and you have an Autobot leader that made generations of kids happy.

But is every Optimus Prime created equal, or do some soldiers rise above the rest? Thank you for asking– allow me to educate you, because today, this Wizard is counting down his top 5 favorite Optimus Prime toys of all time.

 

5) Powermaster Optimus Prime and Cousins

Cousins– it’ll only get more confusing, trust me. This Prime was very unique at the time;  it had a regular mode, a super mode, and then god mode. In the US, we only got Powermaster Prime until a reissue finally gave us God Ginrai Prime. This Prime combinations has Power Master Prime, God Ginrai Prime, Fire Guts God Jinrai, and the first black prime Nucleon Quest Super Convoy. This was the start of multiple Primes and Prime upgrades.

Not to mention, he looks damn cool.

4) Transformers Cyberton Galaxy Force Prime

 

This was such a relief after Energon’s Power Ranger Prime. It has a dynamic design and multiple transformation add-ons that take it to super mode. This has clean lines, great angles, and superb playability. It is really hard to beat this Prime in looks, modes, or play. It will always be in my top five, no doubt. In fact, to add to the mix, this version just got a Transformers Siege upgrade recently! (Click the link for a toy review of it!)

 

3) Masterpiece Optimus Prime MP-10

This version is smaller than the MP-01 and MP-04 versions, but action packed and filled with the great details you need and want. As the mold and transformations are this is a perfect Prime.

2) Classic Optimus Prime G1

This is the original 1984 version, also known as Diaclone Convoy. Brought over from Japan, Hasbro made a trucking toy a icon for generations. Classic, easy transformation, lots of playablity with cab, to robot and trailer, to base– really, this is all 10s on the Scott Prime scale.

1) MAS 01 Mega Action Scale Optimus Prime

This big boy is 18 inches tall, lights up, and is incredible. But, he doesn’t transform. This is a deal breaker for some collectors, but not me. And on my list, this is the winner. Having seen this monster up close, it is amazing beyond the poor pale words I can describe it as. Best of this, it is relatively cheap at $179 retail.
